Nova Scotia Supreme Court rules minister had right to fire entire school board | Daily News Oct 29

HALIFAX – Nova Scotia Supreme Court has upheld a decision by Education Minister Karen Casey to fire the entire Halifax Regional School Board, calling the unusual act “reasonable.”

Casey dismissed the board’s 13 members in December, saying constant bickering had rendered the board ineffective.

Seven of the board members sued the province in hopes of getting their jobs back.

But Justice Heather Robinson says Casey acted in a “reasonable manner” and had the legislative authority to appoint a one-man board.

Wade Marshall, one of the fired board members, says they haven’t decided whether or not to appeal.

Retired bureaucrat Howard Windsor, who has been running the board since December, will remain in his position until municipal elections are held next year.
